The Easiest Way to Place Vinyl on Christmas Ornaments

Learn how to place vinyl on Christmas ornaments. Placing vinyl onto a round surface can be tricky but not with these simple steps.

I love working with vinyl. I vinyl ALL.THE.THINGS.  But up until now, I’ve never tried to place vinyl on Christmas ornaments because I thought the shape of the ornament would make it too difficult. Guess what? It’s not hard if you use these tips.

SUPPLIES FOR VINYL CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

• Ornament
• Vinyl
• Weeding Tools
• Transfer Tape
• Silhouette or Cricut

HOW TO PLACE VINYL ON CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

TIP #1
Use an ornament that is not clear. This has nothing to do with the ease of applying the vinyl and everything to do with the finished product. If you use a clear ornament, you will be able to see the backside of the vinyl through the ornament which is not very attractive. If you use a colored ornament this is not an issue.

TIP #2
Use a small design. The bigger the design is, the more it will have to wrap around the ornament and the harder the process will be. Use a small design that can fit the front and center of the ornament. I used one of my favorite quotes from Christmas Vacation to make these ornaments. TIP #3
After you have cut out your design and applied transfer tape, cut slits in the transfer tape all around the design. This will allow you to manipulate and apply the vinyl more easily. Don’t know how to use transfer tape? Learn how in this transfer tape tutorial.

TIP #4
To apply the vinyl, center your design on the ornament and press the center of the design down first. Then work outward, smoothing the vinyl as you go. The slits that you cut in the transfer tape will help you to “bend” the vinyl around the ornament. Peel off the transfer tape and you have a beautiful custom ornament.

After you have mastered this technique, you will be able to make so many customized ornaments for your tree!
