Learn the basic strokes of hand lettering with these practice sheets for beginners.

Hand lettering is very popular right now. You see it all over Instagram and Facebook.  I could watch hand lettering videos for hours. And I do. They are truly mesmerizing. You can watch tons of videos but the only way you are going to get good at something is if you practice practice practice. That’s why I’ve created this hand lettering practice sheets for beginners. This hand lettering worksheet that I created got a great response and I know you’ll love this one just as much!

This worksheet allows you to practice some of the basic strokes of hand lettering. I’ve also include iPad lettering practice sheets in addition to PDF file so you can choose what lettering method works best for you.

Practice Sheets for Beginners

Before you start hand lettering, you’re going to need some supplies. Here are the supplies I recommend.

HAND LETTERING SUPPLIES

  1.  Practice Sheets (see below for how to access)
  2.   Tombow Dual Brush Pens They are perfect for beginners because the flexible tip allows for thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes.
  3.  Tracing paper – Using tracing paper saves ink. Simply print out one copy of the practice sheet and place a piece of tracing paper over it to practice.
  4. Canson Mixed Media Paper – If you are not using tracing paper, I recommend Canson Mixed Media Paper. You can also use a good quality copy/printer paper. Avoid cheap copy paper because it will cause your brushes to fray quickly.
  5. iPad Pro, Apple Pencil and Procreate app (OPTIONAL) – I recommend these if you want to letter digitally. These tools are a big investment so don’t feel the need to rush out and purchase them if you are just beginning.

HOW TO USE THE HAND LETTERING PRACTICE SHEETS FOR BEGINNERS

The practice sheets come in two formats:

HAND LETTERING TIPS

The key to hand lettering is thick downstrokes and thin upstrokes. To achieve this, press harder on the downstrokes and release the pressure on the upstrokes.

Don’t rush into letters before mastering the basic strokes. I know that it is tempting to rush ahead but trust me…your letters will look so much better if you take time to get the basic strokes correct. When you practice the basic strokes, you are gaining muscle memory and that leads to smoother letters.

Everybody starts at the beginning.  Don’t get down on yourself if your hand lettering doesn’t look just the way you want it to right at the start.  I’m still practicing and refining my technique after many years of lettering. Enjoy the process and the journey!
