Easter Cake Balls

Ingredients

  • 18.25 oz box cake mix
  • 1 can 16 oz store bought frosting
  • 48 oz. candy melts
  • corn syrup
  • sprinkles
  • colored decorating sugar
  • black edible marker
  • paint brush
  • wax paper

Instructions

  1. Bake the cake according to the directions on the box
  2. After the cake has cooled, crumble it into a bowl
  3. Mix in 3/4 of the can of frosting
  4. Roll cake mixture into 1" balls or into egg shapes
  5. Place on cookie sheet and put into fridge for a few hours or in freezer for 15 minutes
  6. Melt the candy melts according to the directions on the package
  7. Do not overheat the candy coating. If it is too thick, add a bit of vegetable oil or shortening to thin it out. Do not add water.
  8. Place the melted candy into a bowl that is at least 3" deep.
  9. Place a cake ball into the bowl, making sure it it fully covered by the candy coating
  10. Lift the cake ball out gently with a spoon
  11. Tap the spoon on the side of the bowl to remove excess candy coating
  12. Place cake ball onto wax paper
  13. When cake balls are dry, decorate.
  14. For chicks:
  15. Use corn syrup to attach sprinkles for the beak, feet and wings
  16. Use the black edible marker to draw 2 eyes
  17. For Easter eggs:
  18. Using the paint brush, paint a design onto the eggs.
  19. Sprinkle the decorating sugar over the corn syrup. Work over a bowl to reuse the sugar
  20. Adhere colored sprinkles to the egg with corn syrup.
