How to Make a Drop Cloth Pillow Cover

I have a slight obsession with pillows. It may border on hoarding. My family complains that there are too many on the couch. And there are only four. If they think four is too many, they don’t want to even KNOW how many I WANT to fill the couch with. But can you REALLY have too many pillows? I don’t think there is such a thing. HomeGoods probably agrees since they just keep feeding my pillow habit. I blame them! But pillows are kinda pricey and it makes more sense to make covers that you can easily switch out instead of buying new pillows all the time. Today I’m going to show you how to make a drop cloth pillow cover. Yes, a pillow cover out of a drop cloth. You can thank me later.
To make this pillow cover, I used the tutorial for my envelope closure pillow. An envelope closure pillow cover is easy to remove for washing and you don’t have to mess with sewing a zipper in. If you can sew a straight stitch, you can sew the pillow cover. I promise.

SUPPLIES:
Drop Cloth
Silhouette (optional)
Vinyl
Americana acrylic paint in sunny day and coastal waters
Paintbrush
Americana fabric paint medium
Directions:
Follow the instructions for the envelope pillow cover tutorial. I made a slight modification to the tutorial for my current pillow. For my 16.5″ pillow, I cut my pieces 19.5″ long (instead of 16.5″) so the pillow cover was slightly loose over the pillow form.
After you have your pillow cover made, now it is time to decorate it. I created a stencil using my Silhouette machine and vinyl. If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can use a regular stencil.
Since you are painting on fabric, you need paint that is able to be washed. You can use fabric paint medium and mix it in a 2:1 ratio with acrylic paint. I did a reverse stencil meaning I painted OUTSIDE the vinyl.
After you paint, let it dry 24-48 hours and set with an iron for 30 seconds.
Place your pillow cover onto a pillow form and enjoy your newest decor. If you are using your pillow outdoors, you’ll want to spray it with a fabric protector so it doesn’t mildew.
So don’t be a pillow hoarder. Make pillow covers instead.
To complete your porch makeover, add some drop cloth curtains and some pops of color.
