Hi! I’m Melanie Artz from Artzy Creations joining you today. I’m a mother to two young girls and a junior high art teacher. I love to do anything creative, and here’s what I have for you today… I came up with an original back to school gift idea for teachers. Being one myself, I think I have probably received some very unusual gifts that are not very practical. So, I have seen and received just about everything. I wanted this gift to be for a teacher friend of mine and I wanted it to be cute and personalized. This is how to make a Burlap Apple for a back to school gift for your son or daughter’s teacher.

Here’s what you need:
  • Burlap
  • Craft Paint (red, brown, green)
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Sewing Machine
  • Stuffing
  • Black Thread
  • Ribbon
  • Sharpie Marker

I took an old rice sack that I had saved for the burlap or you can purchase some at the fabric store. Start by cutting 2 squares roughly 5” x 5”.

Draw an apple shape onto the burlap or freehand cutting the apple shape out. You can print out a clip art apple and then enlarge it on a copy machine. Cut this stencil out and then trace. Cut out two leaves as well.

Paint one of the apples the necessary colors using the craft paints (red, brown, green). Let it dry.

Sew a ¼ “ to ½” boarder around the apple in black thread. The black thread makes for a nice contrast. Make sure to leave an opening to stuff the apple. After stuffing your apple, go around the entire apple a few times. I went three times around. Sew the outline of the leaves and attach the leaves with hot glue.

Take a thin tipped black sharpie marker and write the name of the teacher on the apple.

Now, you can stop here or embellish it a bit further. I wanted my friend to be able to hang this up in her room, so I added some wire to it. Here’s how I attached it to the back. I just threaded it through the burlap on the back. Here is a close up of what I did.

Take a pair of needle nose pliers and twist the wire up into a curl. Attach some ribbon to the wire on one side and there you have it a cute burlap apple for your son/daughter’s teacher.

There you have it! A really cute back to school teacher gift that any teacher would LOVE to have. Thank you for taking the time to check out this post. If you have a chance, stop by Artzy Creations for some more creative things. You can also follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.
