EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! EVERYTHING IS COOL WHEN YOU’RE PART OF THE TEAM! That song has been sung daily in our house since The Lego Movie came out last year. So it was no surprise that when I asked my son what he wanted to be for Halloween he said Emmet. If you have a child who wants an AWESOME Halloween costume, follow my tutorial for a DIY Lego Movie Costume.
To make a Lego Movie Costume, you will need:
Big box
Smaller box
Orange and red spray paint
White and black duct tape
Blue paint
Silver and black paint pens
Pencil
First, cut holes in the big box for your child’s head and arms.
Next, sketch out the Lego Costume on the front of the box using a pencil.
After sketching out the shirt, place masking tape over the areas that will ultimately be colors other than orange. In the photo below, you will see that I taped over the 2 rectangles that will be the pockets. DON’T place tape there because you need some orange to show through. If you look at the final picture you will understand better. After you have all the tape on, spray the box orange. It will take a few coats because the cardboard soaks up a lot of paint.
After the orange paint has dried, use the white duct tape and black duct tape to create the details on the vest. I chose to place the tape directly over the masking tape because when I tried to remove the masking tape, it pulled the orange paint off a bit.
To create the belt buckle, I used silver and black paint pens. For the bottle in the vest pocket, I used blue acrylic paint. I also used the blue acrylic paint for the “V” neck. The black details on the “V” and the line down the middle of the vest were done with black paint pens.
I printed out an Emmet name tag and attached it with duct tape.
Now this next part is probably my favorite. I thought that I had created a pretty awesome costume. But then my son says “Mommy, I’ve GOT to have the piece of resistance! We need to put the piece of resistance on the back”. So I grabbed a small cardboard box from the recycling pile, spray painted it red and attached it to the back with duct tape.
You can complete the costume with a blue long sleeve shirt and orange pants. We are still on the lookout for orange pants so we used shorts instead. This LEGO Movie Costume turned out just how I imagined it. Perfect for my master builder!
