Make this beautiful Thanksgiving Reverse Canvas Sign in minutes with this easy step-by-step tutorial.

I really love the look of farmhouse signs. I love the simplicity and the wooden frames. But wooden frames can get way expensive. Did you know that there is an easy way to get the farmhouse sign look without paying tons of money for frames or having to build your own frames?  It’s called a reverse canvas and today I’m going to show you how to make a Thanksgiving reverse canvas sign.

WHAT IS A REVERSE CANVAS SIGN?

A reverse canvas sign is a sign made using the canvas and the wood frame that comes with the canvas. It is an easy way to get the farmhouse sign look without having to build your own frame.

DOES VINYL STICK TO CANVAS?

Regular vinyl does not stick to canvas very well which is why I recommend using heat transfer vinyl for your reverse canvas projects. Heat transfer vinyl is a special vinyl that you apply to fabric using either an iron or a heat press. It’s like the modern day version of an iron on. You can learn all about heat transfer vinyl here.

HOW TO MAKE A THANKSGIVING REVERSE CANVAS SIGN

To make a Thanksgiving reverse canvas sign, follow the steps in this reverse canvas post to remove the canvas from the frame. You can either stain your frame or leave it natural. I chose to stain mine because there were staples on the front and I wanted them to blend in. The process photos below don’t show the stained frame but the photo above does. I used Minwax stain in Espresso. Let the frame dry thoroughly. You don’t want any stain getting onto the canvas.

I used my Low Tide font and a clip art laurel that I drew. I currently don’t have the laurel available for download but you can find numerous svg files on Creative Market or you can convert any image to an svg file. If you’d like a different fall quote, check out my Fall Quote Cut File Bundle.

Open up Silhouette Studio or Cricut Design Space and type out and phrase that you’d like for your reverse canvas sign. Reverse your image and cut it out on heat transfer vinyl (HTV). My favorite HTV is Siser Easy Weed. I get mine from Expressions Vinyl. The color that I’m using for this reverse canvas is Burgundy.

After you cut and weed the vinyl design, adhere the HTV to the canvas using either an iron or a heat press. I use a Cricut Easy Press.  After you are done pressing, turn the canvas over and press the back to ensure a strong bond of the vinyl to the canvas.

To attach the canvas to the frame, simply place hot glue around the edges of the back of the frame, and glue the canvas back on. You can also use a staple gun. Use scissors or an Exacto knife to remove the excess fabric.
