This DIY Christmas Banner is so easy to make with your Silhouette or Cricut. It comes together in minutes and is the perfect addition to your tree or mantel.

Every year I create a themed Christmas tree. In the past I’ve created a rustic-themed tree and also a coastal-themed tree. But buying a whole new set of ornaments to fill a new themed tree gets super expensive so this year I used the ornaments that I had to decorate a red and white themed tree. I wanted lots of ribbon and I wanted the tree to feel “full” which is sometimes hard to do with an artificial tree. To fill out the tree, I made a DIY Christmas banner to drape along the branches. Friends…let me tell you that this is one of the easiest projects I have made. It was last minute and made with everything that I had on hand. I think it turned out great and is just what my tree needed. So today I’m sharing exactly how I did it.

First things first, here are some basic posts on SVG files and Silhouette Studio to get you started. This tutorial uses text only but you can definitely add some fun SVG designs if you want.

HOW TO MAKE A CHRISTMAS BANNER WITH A SILHOUETTE MACHINE

  1. Measure your banner flags to determine how big your letters should be. Mine are approximately 3″x3″.
  2. In Silhouette Studio, create your text with the text tool in the left panel. Use a font that is easily cuttable. The font should be smooth on the edges and not too thin.
  3. Place your HTV onto the cutting mat with the carrier sheet face down. Not familiar with HTV? Here’s a post on how to use HTV.
  4. Mirror your image and send it to cut. Choose heat transfer vinyl from the drop down menu. I usually adjust my blade depth for a deeper cut to ensure that everything cuts crisp.
  5. Cut out your design and weed the excess vinyl.
  6. Flip your design over and use the Cricut EasyPress 2 to adhere each letter to one pennant flag.
  7. Hang on your tree or mantel and enjoy.
